“Saluting Greatness: The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” will the 2008 theme of the civil rights leader’s birthday celebration sponsored by the Oneonta Branch of the NAACP. The tribute consisting of a community potluck dinner, an awards ceremony, a musical program, and an open mike will take place at 3PM, Sunday January 20, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut Street, Oneonta.
Oneonta Attorney Andrew M. Puritz and SUCO Counselor Edward “Bo” Whaley will be honored during the celebration with the NAACP’s 2008 Thurgood Marshall Unity Awards for their outstanding contribution to civil rights in the community.
The criteria for the NAACP’s 2008 Unity Scholarship Award in Memory of Martin Luther King will be presented, as well as the organization’s goals for the coming year.
Drs. Stanley Fox and Chris Wolf Gould will be featured together with their jazz bands, as well as singers Barbara Roberts, Yolanda Sharpe, and Rachel Fox. The SUCO choir, Voices of Serenity, led by Ed Bachus will present gospel selections.
The community at large is invited to participate in the celebration with short spontaneous or prepared remarks based on the 2008 theme. Poetry, song and dance will also be welcomed tributes at the Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. birthday party.
The NAACP, which focuses on issues of unity, justice, and equality, invites all to partake in the meal and birthday cake on January 20. Please bring a dish to share. The event is free and open to all.
