January 17, 2008—The February 4th deadline is fast approaching for comments on the regulations for Medicaid’s targeted case management services.
Described in the Bazelon Center’s December 17th Information Alert, the rules would significantly limit access to critical mental health services for children in foster care, people with court-appointed guardians, paroled offenders, special education students and others with mental health needs (see summary).
Model Comments Available
Advocacy groups and individuals should let the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services know of their concerns with the proposed rules. You may want to use the Bazelon Center’s draft as a model, online in MSWord or PDF.
Comments are due before 5 pm on February 4, 2008. Although the rules will become effective on March 3, they can be modified before then, based on the nature and volume of comments received by CMS. Accordingly, advocates for children and adults with mental disabilities should submit comments to increase the likelihood of modifications (click here for how to submit comments).
